Early SS M33 Dagger  - Full Roehm Inscription

On 3 February, 1934, SA Chief, Ernst Roehm, signed SA Order Nr. 1444/34, thereby authorizing the production and distribution of SA and SS Honour Daggers.

The daggers would bear Roehm's personal dedication; "In herzlicher Kameradschaft, Ernst Roehm".

Daggers were ordered for all those, both officers and men, who had been members of the SA or SS, since 31 December, 1931.

This order was subsequently extended (20 February, 1934) to include those members who had transferred from the Hitler Youth into the SA or SS, prior to this date.

A further order, of 12 April 1934, issued by the office of the Reichsfuehrer-SS, stated that SS identification numbers were to be stamped into the crossguards of these daggers.

A total of 9,900 SS Daggers were subsequently produced bearing the Roehm inscription.

However, on 30 June 1934, events took a somewhat dramatic turn for the worse, at least from Ernst Roehm's perspective.

Hitler, riding on a wave of paranoia, and convinced that Roehm was looking to usurp his Fuehrer, ordered that Roehm be detained at Stadelheim Prison, Munich. Roehm, was subsequnetly shot, having chosen not to accede to Hitler's request that he commit suicide. It is believed that the then Inspector of Concentration Camps, Theodor Eicke, enraged by Roehm's indignance, pulled the trigger.

The 'Night of the Long Knives' saw the slaying of close to 250 SA men and officers.

Following Roehm's 'treachery' and subsequent execution, a directive was issued by the Reichsfuehrer-SS on 4 July 1934, ordering the removal of the Roehm dedication from all Honour Daggers. Removal was to be by grinding and failure to comply with this directive resulted in severe punishment, if caught.

Consequently, when one considers the overriding fanaticism of the SS and its members, the survival of a complete Roehm inscription is truly something and the rareity of such a dagger cannot be emphasised enough. Furthermore, as mentioned above, a directive was issued requiring said Honour Daggers to be marked with the owner's SS serial number.

However, as a result of the relatively short period of time, between this directive (12 April 1934) and Roehm's subsequent demise (30 June 1934), few Roehm Honour Daggers were ultimately numbered. In his marvellous and highly recommended book on the SS Dagger ("Exploring The Dress Daggers And Swords of The German SS"), acclaimed collector, author and dealer, Thomas Wittmann, states that (in his opinion) only 25% to 35% of said daggers were numbered.

Just prior to the annexation of Danzig, Albert Forster, decreed the institution of the Danzig Cross on 31st August 1939.  Two grades of the award were authorised, namely the First and Second Class.  The award was, it was stated, "For meritorious service in the building up of the Nazi Party, within the free state of Danzig".

The First Class Cross is an extremely rare decoration.  A total of only 88 awards were made, the majority of which were conferred on 24th October 1939, the major presentation date decreed since the inception of the award two months previously.  It is not known if it was a requisite that the Danzig Cross – Second Class had to be awarded before the First Class could be conferred.  In the case of SS - Oberführer und Oberst der Schutzpolizei Hans Griep his file shows that he was awarded both classes.
